The biggest mistake I see in UX writing portfolios is when a writer has thrown up screenshots of their work… with no context. How do I know whether or not your work was successful if I don’t know what the purpose of the project was? Creating your portfolio is an opportunity to practice user-centered design. Most likely, they are hiring managers or business owners who are busy and overwhelmed with choices.

Moderated usability tests are the most traditional type of test. Whole usability labs are set up, complete with one-way mirrors for stakeholders to observe, for the purpose of conducting moderated usability tests. In a moderated test an unbiased facilitator talks with the user, reading aloud the tasks and prompting the user to think aloud as he or she accomplishes the tasks. Creative Bloq is not a web design ezine, which gives it an advantage in this list.

The main reason is that I’m very curious about the effects it will have for both me as a blogger and the blog itself. Not only do I look for ways to increase traffic but I also want to extend my connections, share opinions, knowledge and experiences. You probably encounter words written by UX writers all the time without even realizing it (again, because it’s kind of invisible). One easy way to start learning about UX writing is to simply notice that it’s there.

They want blog posts, reading lists, short interviews, personal essays, memoirs, critical essays, book reviews, investigative projects, and long-form journalism. They are looking for articles about mental health, relationships, and getting healthier. We publish articles of anywhere between 600–2,500 words, depending on subject complexity. Articles may be casual in tone and content—great for less-intensive tutorials and posts—or rigorously structured and edited. All should be well-considered explorations of current and cutting-edge topics in the web industry.

Every blogger who has been around a while has had this comment, but we all learn from it. I like to think of every article I put out as important as a legal document. Finally, UX writing case studies are the key to a standout portfolio. A case study is like a short story of a previous project you’ve done. Briefly explain what the project was, how you tackled it, and what the outcome was — showing your work along the way. In addition to UX-focused resources, there are a growing number of UX writing-specific resources and books available now.

My main motivation to start writing was not the money at first, because I had a steady full-time job. I was looking for a way to start establishing my personal brand, contribute to the tech community and add something to stand out on my resumé. But once I discovered publications willing to pay up hundreds of dollars for my writing pieces, I would be lying if I said the payment didn’t become a great motivation to keep going.
